CONAI: Integrated Sustainability Report

The document drawn up by Consorzio Nazionale Imballaggi (National Packaging Consortium) confirms the essential importance of data management and reporting with relation to sustainability.

Recently published, the 2023 edition of CONAI’s Sustainability Report presents all the accountability activities which are an integral part of the Consortium’s strategy and policies, implementing a fully data-driven scientific approach.

All the environmental data are, in fact, analysed following LLC (Life Cycle Costing) evaluation logics, reporting on operating, environmental and socio-economic performances at international level through the Green Economy Report (GER), the innovative reporting model that complies with the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) standard developed by the Fondazione per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile (Sustainable Development Foundation). The Report, drawn up in compliance with the standard according to the «GRI-with reference to» option, offers an overview of performances on 3 levels that refer to the country, CONAI and the organization.

The measure of success

In reminding readers that Italy is the country that recycles more than any other country in Europe, arriving at an effective 71.5%, the Report offers a reasoned review that starts from the numbers and analyses them from a series of points of view. The result is a photograph of a sector that generates value, with its 695,786 consortium members, able to manage 4.8 million tonnes of effective recycling, equivalent to 324 Towers of Pisa of saved raw material.

In economic terms, we are talking about 1.5 billion euros, which takes on an even more significant importance if translated into saved CO2, which reaches 4,7 million tonnes, equivalent to 3,767 circuits of the world by plane. The economic support to consortium members is also significant, with 680 million disbursed to Municipalities, and 24 million to operators involved in collection and 440 million those involved in treatment and recycling.

Compliance with the latest regulations of the sector

Among the new elements of the 2023 edition, the document includes the Environmental Statement - approved for the purpose of REGULATION (EC) no. 1221/2009 (EMAS) -, effectively giving rise to the Consortium’s first Integrated Sustainability Report. Elements covered also include “Scenari e prospettive per la decarbonizzazione del settore” (Scenarios and prospects for the decarbonisation of the sector) drawn up in collaboration with Italy for Climate.

Finally, the report envisages the constant and documented involvement of Governance and Management Bodies and has received the Technical Assurance of RINA Services through a verification process covering the whole of 2023.
