Polysmart invests $60m in Nigeria’s largest plastic recycling plant
The new facility, which will be developed in phases, is expected to commence operations by the end of March 2026, with full commissioning scheduled for July 2026.
Polysmart Packaging, one of the pioneers of food-grade rPET recycling in Nigeria, has today announced a $60 million expansion plan to construct the largest plastic recycling plant in the country. This unprecedented investment underscores the company’s commitment to promoting the circular economy, creating employment opportunities, enabling brands to reduce their carbon footprint, meet global sustainability standards, and mitigate the environmental crisis caused by plastic pollution.
The new plant will be equipped with state-of-the-art technologies for processing multiple polymer streams, with a strong focus on the production of high-quality, food-grade recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) in both resin and flake form, compliant with the regulations of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The facility will also produce HDPE, LDPE, and PP materials for non-food applications.
The plant will have an input capacity of 100,000 tonnes of mixed plastics, significantly increasing the region’s overall recycling throughput and diverting substantial volumes of plastic waste from landfills and waterways. By producing certified food-grade rPET locally, Polysmart Packaging Limited will supply a critical raw material to the food and beverage industry, helping to reduce reliance on imported virgin plastics.
The facility will ensure that post-consumer plastic waste - including rPET, HDPE, and PP - is reintroduced into the manufacturing cycle and will enable the recovery and recycling of over 5.5 billion PET bottles annually. By scaling up both food-grade and non-food-grade recycling capacity, Polysmart is expected to deliver carbon savings of up to 170,000 tonnes, conserve energy, and align with global ESG and circular economy standards adopted by leading multinational companies.
